This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. This particular series of segments features Michael Shaw, a community reporter for Assignment Zero. Assigment Zero is classic example of what tech journalist Dan Gillmor has called "Distributed Journalism" in his ground-breaking book,
We the Media. One of the basic ideas of our film is that Free Open Source Software is so big, and so influential, that it will change the way that humanity does everything from journalism to television to movies to government and even religion.
This series of interviews with Michael Shaw is a great example of the effect that Free Open Source Software is having on journalism. Both Dan Gillmor and Michael Shaw say in their interview that Free Open Source Software is one of the things that is both permitting distributed journalism to happen, and that Free Open Source Software is partly responsible for giving reporters to create the news in a distributed and collaborative way that imitates the way that Free Open Source Software is produced.
Michael Shaw is the kind of guy you want to go to a ballgame with and drink a couple of beers and discuss the meaning of life. Michael is guaranteed to put a smile on your face inside of 5 minutes of knowing him. At the time that I met him, Mike was gathering information about the influence of Free Open Source Software on politics. In this particular segment, Michael explains (summary needed, please help!)
